Nebraska’s 2022 Day of Empathy event is bringing people from different backgrounds together to not only raise awareness, but allow for voices of people directly impacted by the system to be heard and taken into full consideration to create legislative change. We are creating a lobby day that will educate people directly impacted by the criminal justice system on their voting rights, how to actively engage in the legislative process and share with elected officials their stories and experiences about navigating their reentry and how organizations and programming have impacted their lives returning home after incarceration. Individuals participating in this event will now become equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to become advocates for the future. When we make space for people directly impacted to be heard, bring in allies to show solidarity, and have the support of elected officials, there lies a combination to create positive change.
