National Day of Empathy in Oregon, Powered by Mothers & Hosted by the Family Preservation Project

Event is virtual

Zoom Webinar
Portland, OR

When: Tuesday, March 2nd, 12:00 p.m. Pacific time

On behalf of the beloved Family Preservation Project (a program of the YWCA) and Dream Corps Justice, a national bipartisan criminal justice reform organization, on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021, we will gather for the fifth annual Day of Empathy. Join us as women directly impacted by our criminal legal system engage in conversation with lawmakers and folks from the law enforcement community about the role of empathy in creating a more just and equitable system.

We are thrilled to announce that our panels will be moderated by award-winning authors and friends of the Family Preservation Project, Cheryl Strayed and Robin Romm. Special guests also include Brian Lindstrom, who will introduce and screen his short documentary film, “Like a Shield”; Award-winning Author and Illustrator, Carson Ellis; newly elected Multnomah County DA, Mike Schmidt; and the convener of the Portland Interfaith Clergy Resistance, Rabbi Ariel Stone. Finally, we will be joined by a very special and talented musical guest, Grammy-award winning Colin Meloy of the Decemberists.

Women represent the fastest growing segment of our prison population, yet they often remain an afterthought in policy discussions. Each woman behind bars represents 2.5 children for whom they were caring, up until their arrest. Behind every woman in prison, and behind each of her children, is a real experience

The Day of Empathy is an opportunity to shine a light on people impacted by the criminal legal system to uplift and amplify their voices. We believe transformation is possible with empathy.

Join us to see how you can support this mission. If you or a loved one is system impacted (or if you're a non-impacted ally!), join us for this year's #DayofEmpathy.

UPDATE:
We will be live streaming to the Mothering Inside Facebook page throughout the duration of the event. The Mothering Inside Facebook page link is here: https://www.facebook.com/FamilyPreservationProject/

Empathy Network advocates and organizers across our nation will seek to explore the role of empathy in changing existing policies and practices in our criminal legal system. On Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021, we will gather for the fifth annual Day of Empathy. By registering for this #DayofEmpathy event, your email will be shared with Dream Corps, the event organizer, and their affiliated organization.
