COVID-19 Help for Remote Students & Workers

Access to broadband internet is crucial to a growing remote workforce and evolving virtual learning environments.

Close to 42 million people across the country lack adequate access to broadband, with Black, Latinx, and Indigenous households suffering disproportionately. Nearly 60% of students in low-income families will have trouble completing their homework in a digital learning environment due to a lack of home wifi or adequate learning devices.

COVID-19 has shown us the importance of access to a reliable internet connection. You can help ensure every household in America has internet access by urging Congress to prioritize it in the next stimulus package.

Your letter to congressional leadership:

I’m contacting you today regarding the stimulus bills that are currently being debated to address the ongoing coronavirus crisis. I urge you to ensure that any final legislation passed by Congress that addresses this issue includes provisions guaranteeing equitable access to broadband as well as the provision of important devices necessary for students and workers to be able to continue their education and career in these challenging times.

This crisis dramatically shifted education and economic activity, both of which are now reliant on reliable connectivity to high speed internet. To ensure that we do not further entrench economic and racial disparities in both learning and employment, this legislation must include a substantial credit for broadband internet services which are used by American students and workers, as well as funding for the provision of necessary devices like computers and wifi hotspots to ensure that all Americans can remain engaged in their work.

It’s also vitally important that American workers and students aren’t penalized for economic suffering during this crisis, which is why this legislation should prohibit telecommunication providers from terminating service, or charging late fees, due to an inability to pay related to the coronavirus crisis.

This crisis has impacted the lives of every American, which is why it is so important that the legislation Congress passes equitably impacts the lives of all of us. Thank you for your work on this important issue.
