In 2018, Dream Corps JUSTICE led a coalition of directly impacted advocates to pass what's now known as the biggest piece of criminal justice reform legislation in recent decades: The First Step Act. Since being signed into law in December 2018, thousands of people have returned home from prison and been reunited with family and loved ones.
But there's still work to be done. We must continue pushing lawmakers to fully fund the bill each year – if they don't, the First Step Act's full potential for mass family reunification will never be realized; thousands of grandparents will pass behind bars without getting to hold their grandbabies, parents will perish before seeing their kids as adults, and youth will age in darkness without getting to experience light.
